My Closing Thoughts

March 11th, 2011 4 comments

Well, another election has come to an end. The detailed results can be found here, if you haven’t seen them yet. As we wrap up, I’d like to share some closing thoughts with our loyal readers.

I’ve seen a lot of DSU Elections in my (excessive length of) time at Dalhousie. I’ve been an observer, a failed candidate, a successful candidate, a failed Presidential candidate, a pundit, and official agent and a referendum spokesperson. I can tell you that a tremendous amount of work goes into a campaign, whether you win it or not. I can also tell you from experience that I’ve felt nearly every sentiment that one can from viewing the election results. Lord knows there are a lot of them.

To our newly elected leaders, Saulnier, Bouchard, Kurin, Arron, Griffin, Ma, MaGill and Scrimgeour, I wish you the best of luck. Your hard work (well, mostly) has paid off. There is still more work to come, but hopefully this gauntlet has helped prepare you for the challenges you will face in your respective roles. That goes for you, too, Loaded Ladle volunteers; if anything, you’ve got the biggest challenge of all ahead of you.

Given the high profile roles that all of the successful candidates have had in the DSU this year (respectfully including our new Senate Reps), I’d say there has been a pretty resounding show of support for the current direction of the DSU. That doesn’t mean the status quo is okay; rather, the things you’re talking about for further improving the Union are getting some traction. I’m hopeful and optimistic that you can live up to those commitments.

As for the other candidates, don’t despair. Believe me when I say that some of the most amazing people I know are unsuccessful DSU election candidates who have gone on to do incredible things. You’ve participated in an incredibly valuable learning experience. No doubt you all know much more about our community, our issues and our fellow students than you did before you began (if you don’t, I think you now know why things didn’t pan out :P ). I know I did. But don’t worry, most unsuccessful candidates don’t end up like me.

Looking back on it, would we really have been in such bad shape if some of these candidates had won? The passion and effort so many of you have put into this is considerable. Sebastian, I know a lot of people you won over with your charisma and the heart you put into your campaign. John, you’ve injected some much needed light-heartedness into this DSU and reminded us not to take ourselves too seriously. Evan, you’ve accomplished so much and with your dedication and creativity, I have no doubt you’ll continue to go and do amazing things.

Tom, Andrew and Chris R., all of you are still young and have come a long way in a short time. Stay involved and don’t let your great ideas fall to the wayside. Imad, Adam and Chris C., your commitments to the DSU have been considerable and we all owe you thanks for it. I’ve no doubt that you’ll find success in wherever you each decide to go next. Last but not least, Karl, I’ve probably enjoyed our chats on the campaign trail than those I’ve had with any other candidates. Don’t let go of your passion. I hope you’ll be willing to find a continued, valued place in the DSU.

After all, the game’s not over yet. We still need a Vice President (Finance and Operations), two more Senators, Members-at-Large, seats on the Board, Commissioners and numerous others who are willing to participate and keep the DSU active and vibrant. Many of you have demonstrated that potential. Just because things didn’t pan out how you initially hoped doesn’t mean you don’t have reason to be proud. After all, each and every one of you managed to get at least ~200 students behind your cause. That is no small feat. Don’t take that for granted.

Thank you to you all. I wish all of our candidates the best and I look forward to hearing about all of your student leadership successes and exciting new opportunities in the coming year.

An Experiment

Finish the following phrase. Limit it to one sentence. People who write run-on sentences will receive scowls and scorn.

“I’m voting for _____ because…”

Feel free to be anonymous. Also, feel free to substitute “would vote for” if you can’t, or “voted for” if you already did. Let’s be inclusive. :)

Critical Questions in Review

March 6th, 2011 11 comments

So, near the beginning of the campaign, I offered my initial impressions of the candidates and asked them each a critical question.  I feel the ones who have responded deserve a bit more recognition than the comments offer them, so I’m going to include the responses here. I’ve also included the questions below for easier reference.

If anyone has not yet answered, it’s not too late: I’ll update the post and make a note of it at the beginning.  I’ve received them in comments, by email and even in writing, so I’ll accept any format. There is also a distinct possibility that I missed an answer buried in comments on another post. If I did, someone please inform me.

UPDATE 1: Hillman has now been included. I’m quite devastated about it.
UPDATE 2: Price has now been included.
UPDATE 3: Saulnier has now been included. Additionally, both Price and Saulnier have pointed out that they answered my questions orally. My apologies for not including them earlier.
UPDATE 4: Scrimgeour has now been included.
UPDATE 5: Connors has now been included. Should also note that the absence of a response should be taken only for what it is. It isn’t necessarily a bad sign if the candidate is wise enough to stay away from Punditry.

Presidential (Presedential?) Debate

Missed the opening statements getting Hillman a hot chocolate (delivered Debo-style straight to the stage).  Also missed the preliminary questions (things like your favourite American Idol person).

Kandidate’s Karaoke and Other Updates

March 4th, 2011 10 comments

Since Mike Smit isn’t doing his wrap-ups this year and I have a few random small things to post, I figured I’d toss them all in together.

  • Candidate’s, take heed: there’s a new event on the DSU election calendar.  Inspired by fellow pundits Rob and Maggie, all candidates are invited to come out to Karaoke at the Grad House tomorrow night (Friday) at 8:00pm.  Note that Dempsey has some pretty respectable experience in this domain, so the event is guaranteed to be a good time.
  • On a related note, DAGS was proud to host 11/18 candidates at our Council meeting tonight.  Props to those of you who came out.  However, we’re surely not the only society event to host candidates.  Where else have you spotted the candidates?  How did they do?  Were messages standard, or tailored to your particular student body?  Tell us about it in the comments?
  • DalNews has a pretty timely article on pensions.  All Board of Governors candidates (and the Presidential candidates… and possibly all candidates in general) should be reading this: http://dalnews.dal.ca/2011/03/03/pension.html
  • In honour of Rob’s recent post, I feel compelled to note that the DSU will start the process for hiring a new Vice President (Finance and Operations) shortly.  Unsuccessful candidates and intrigued observers, take note.
  • There’s been very little coverage of “drama” this year.  I attribute that partially to a relatively clean campaign.  With that said, if there has been any juicy gossip that we just haven’t caught, please feel free to share it with us via the Submit News button.
  • Notwithstanding the previous point, there has already been at least one fine: Saulnier was hit for pre-campaigning, according to a post on the Elections Committee door.  Rumour has it there was a meeting shortly after I last checked with anticipated additional fines.  Anyone seen or heard of any others?
  • By popular request (and impending need), I intend to do a review of the candidates’ written platforms in the near future (yes, including Hillman’s 10 page platform.  Until that time, I would leave to hear some feedback on them in the comments here to help me gather my own ideas.
  • Student Appreciation Night is coming up and the application forms for society and individual awards are in.  Yes, applications; it doesn’t appear to be nominations, though I’m not sure if that’s a change from previous years or not.  In any case, you can find the individual awards form here as well as the society awards form here.

    First Impressions and Critical Questions

    March 2nd, 2011 16 comments

Now that we’ve been introduced to all of the candidates, I’d like to provide you with my overall impression based on three criteria: their poster, their video and their debate performance. I’ll be delving into them in greater detail based on their website, platform and other materials later in the campaign. Please keep in mind this is just a first look.

I’m also going to assign each candidate with a critical question. I don’t anticipate the CRO to ask anything like what I intend to ask. Any candidate brave enough to respond will have their response posted here.

    Liveblogging the Sexton Debate

Starting a bit late, but I’ll get what I can.  There’s a break so that this massive post doesn’t take up the whole site.
